ABOUT SHERIFF HILLIARD

Sheriff Shane Hilliard was born in Yancey County and grew up on South Toe River.  He now reside in the Windom community with his wife of fifteen years, Leslie Hilliard, and two children, Hudson and Hollyn. He is a 1998 graduate of Mountain Heritage High School. Shane is a conservative Christian who supports family values and defends the constitution.  He serves as deacon of Double Island Baptist Church, and his faith is a very important part of his life.

Shane began my career in law-enforcement with the Yancey County Sheriff’s Office 20 years ago. He has had the honor and privilege of working for both Sheriff Kermit and Gary Banks. Throughout my career, Shane has served in almost every capacity at the Sheriff’s office.  His jobs have included: detention officer, telecommunicator, patrol deputy, canine deputy, court security/bailiff, and jail administrator. From 2014 until 2022, Shane served in the role as Chief Deputy. On January 1, 2022, Hilliard was appointed as Sheriff of Yancey County.

During his time at the Sheriff’s Office, he has implemented many new programs and worked closely with members of the community for the betterment of Yancey County. Such programs include: Church Security Training Program, Project Life Saver, Elderly Call Care Program, and most recently the Sheriff’s Office Youth Day Camp. Shane is a North Carolina certified instructor in law enforcement, detention certification, and active shooter training. He also holds instructor certifications for the National Rifle Association and 4-H shooting sports.

While serving at the Sheriff’s Office, Shane completed several executive training programs, including: North Carolina State University Law Enforcement Executive Program, FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Program, FBI Command College, National Institute of Corrections Jail Administration, and he also holds an Advanced Law Enforcement Certification.

Yancey County has been Shane’s home his whole life. It has been a wonderful place to grow up and now raise a family of his own. Shane will work hard to ensure Yancey County remains a place where future generations can enjoy the same liberties and safe community that past generations have been privileged to.  As your Sheriff, he commits to upholding the constitution and defending your rights and freedoms as citizens of Yancey County.
